Beyond the famous “anal-spitroast golden shower bondage guro” loophole, and the waste of tax money, there are many other issues with virginity pledges:
- Since they generally occur in large group, high-pressure settings, they are essentially coerced speech.
- Making a huge public show of how pure you are, and wearing jewelry telling everyone how pure you are, is really in conflict with Biblical principles (Matt 6:5-6).
- The virginity pledge focus on PIV sex overlooks the reality of queer Christians, and the wording of the pledges has gotten progressively more heteronormative and political over the years.
- The emphasis on marriage as a sexual and emotional cure-all ignores the fact that many couples (especially Protestant Christians, who are the main target groups for virginity pledges) wind up getting divorced, and left in limbo vis-a-vis the sexual ethics they’ve been brought up with. Perhaps you should save your virginity for your second marriage?
