Although I’ve never seen this in writing, I have a hunch that the cover artists of the old pulp fantasy/sci-fi magazines must have shifted heavily into (a) role-playing-game artwork, and (b) heavy-metal album covers.  It’s the same style and content. Above, Boris Vallejo, the Picasso of pulp.
