Pygmalion and Galatea, Gerome, c1890. The “statue fetish” or agalamatophilia, dates back to at least the story of Pygmalion from ancient Greece.  In fact, lots of the many Greek transformation stories (Syrinx, Medua, etc.) have similar themes. Agalamatophilia is sort of a catch-all for a number of fetishes that might have pretty different valences.  Pygmalion thinks his statue is hot, and wants it to be a real woman.  Medusa turns people into stone statues, which has a strong appeal to bondage and objectification kinks, as well as hard-media fetishes.

I just ran into a fascinating little discussion about the percentage of internet usage that is taken up by porn (probably, FWIW, between 1% and 5%).  Anyway, one guy mentions that such-and-such a set of numbers don’t take into account text erotica, especially fanfiction.  Now, one response might be: text takes up hardly any memory in comparison to video or still images.  Another response, quite well-worn, is that text is inherently non-pornographic. Nowhere is this problem worse, though, than with leather boys.  (And what are those chest harnesses supposed to be about?  I’ve never understood.)  John Stoltenberg, who is admittedly kind of nuts, wrote that gay BDSM (and porn) never has fixed top/bottom roles, because then both the men involved get to be hyper-masculine.  This is an absurd over-generalization, but like a lot of over-generalizations about porn, it’s easy to defend. I think it would be more accurate to say that the leather fetish aspect of leather culture overwhelms the practicalities of the clothing.  So a collar might be more important as a piece of leather apparel than as something subs wear to be leashed with and remind them of their place.
