In Jaekin’s 1975 film version, here, the collars are (I think) kind of silly looking.

Reage was fascinatingly detailed about clothing and textures and the like. (O, after all, is a fashion photographer). Although the book is full of chains and leather, it is also full of soft media as far as the submissives are concerned. The picture below is a good indication.

Crepax apparently wanted to update this when he published a comic version of O. In the scene above at Samois, originally the girls are naked. In the movie they wear sort of nightgowns. Crepax has given them a variety of fetish gear more suitable for the hard-media fantasies of 1975.

When Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer was published, Ezra Pound supposedly said “At last! An unprintable book that is readable!” Pauline Reage (also known as Dominique Aury, and actually named Anne Declos)’s Story of O filled that role for BDSM in 1954.

Reage raised the bar on BDSM erotic writing: The Image, another classic, was published in 1956. The book became a major trope-setting work, with BDSM organizations and porn producers taking names from the book, numerous “sequels” appearing, and many kinky folks even adopting the triskelion insignia mentioned in the book. Meanwhile, anti-porn folks spent decades assuring the world that Reage was not a woman. Today, the book continues to exert a strong influence even on people who have not read it.
