Reage was fascinatingly detailed about clothing and textures and the like.  (O, after all, is a fashion photographer).  Although the book is full of chains and leather, it is also full of soft media as far as the submissives are concerned.  The picture below is a good indication.
Crepax apparently wanted to update this when he published a comic version of O.  In the scene above at Samois, originally the girls are naked.  In the movie they wear sort of nightgowns.  Crepax has given them a variety of fetish gear more suitable for the hard-media fantasies of 1975.
